Yesterday's blog mentioned the current floral Norwich initiative. We have to go back almost 400 years to appreciate this fully.
It was on May 3rd, 1631, that the first Florists' Feast took place in Norwich. Such was its success that it became an annual event. The idea was to welcome people to Norwich.
Not only were there flowers. People also feasted and there was entertainment and even a play.
It is thought that the Florists' Feast was inspired by the Norwich Strangers - a group of people from mainland Europe who came to the city as weavers and brought with them much more. Not only did they bring weaving skills to Norwich, they also brought the love of flowers.
I would like to find out more about the Florists' Feast. I feel some more research on its way.
